Power, control and capacity for electric heavy-duty applications

Högspänning

Electrification of heavy-duty applications

Electrification has for a long time been an established choice for lighter applications, particularly those operating indoors with predictable duty cycles. As technology continues to mature and requirements for emission reductions increase, the possibilities for high-voltage solutions have expanded significantly. We offer powerful, safe and well-integrated systems for the electrification of heavy mobile and marine applications.

When power demands high voltage

For electric mobile machinery, a high-voltage solution is often more suitable than low voltage when power requirements exceed approximately 30–50 kW, which is common in heavier applications. High-voltage systems are always dimensioned according to the application’s specific requirements and duty cycle, but typically operate in the range of 350 to 800 volts, and in some cases up to 1,000 volts. Higher voltage brings several advantages, enabling more compact, efficient and reliable systems, while also allowing fast charging to minimise downtime.

High-voltage solutions are well suited for applications with high power demands and requirements for short, fast charging cycles. Typical examples include excavators, forestry machines and mining vehicles. With the right solution, these machines can be electrified without compromising performance or operating time.

High-voltage technology is developing rapidly, opening up new opportunities for the electrification of heavy machinery and marine powertrains. Technological advances and innovative solutions are now addressing infrastructure and charging challenges that previously limited progress. In the years ahead, the transition is set to accelerate, driven by increasing customer demands, stricter regulations and rising fuel prices. While the initial investment may be higher, studies show that electric machines often deliver a lower total cost of ownership than fossil-fuelled alternatives.

System solutions optimised for real-world operation

Building a high-voltage system requires more than simply selecting powerful components – everything must work seamlessly together. The system needs to be correctly dimensioned, communicate reliably and be protected against faults, overloads and wear.

We design solutions based on real operating conditions to ensure sufficient power and energy for a full working day, without unnecessary margins or the risk of downtime. Our strength lies in creating systems that are robust, easy to use and built for long-term reliability.

Simply assembling powerful components is not enough to create a solution that truly works. Each system solution must be carefully dimensioned for the specific task the machine is designed to perform. We take into account power requirements, energy consumption, temperatures and the operator’s driving experience, while also ensuring the right level of safety and robustness. This approach results in solutions that perform reliably in real-world conditions.

Engineering high-voltage systems for performance and efficiency

Developing effective high-voltage solutions is about balancing technology, performance and energy efficiency. At ETP, we design systems based on application requirements and customer objectives. Through careful technology selection, optimisation and integration, we deliver solutions that combine power, precision and durability.

Each system begins with a thorough analysis of the machine’s power and energy requirements. Based on this analysis, we develop a concept design and initiate the dimensioning process to select the most suitable motor or combination of motors. In our high-voltage systems, we exclusively use synchronous motors to achieve high efficiency, compact design and low weight.

Battery energy density is one of the key challenges in electric systems, and its characteristics require all surrounding components to be optimised with the battery in focus. By carefully analysing the energy and power requirements of each function, we dimension the system to achieve the optimal balance between energy efficiency, performance and cost. In many cases, using several smaller motors results in higher overall efficiency and reduced energy demand.

Our solutions are based on lithium-ion batteries offering high safety, long service life and advanced control. The result is robust, scalable and reliable systems that meet demanding requirements for both sustainability and technical performance.
