High voltage solutions

Power, control and capacity for the electric applications of the future

Electrification of heavy-duty applications

Electrification has long been a given for lighter applications, especially those that operate indoors and have a predictable driving cycle. As technology matures and emission reduction requirements increase, the possibilities for high-voltage solutions have broadened considerably. We can offer powerful, safe and well-packaged systems for the electrification of heavy mobile and marine applications.

When power demands high voltage

A high-voltage solution for electric mobile machines is often more suitable than low voltage when the power exceeds approximately 30-50kW, which is often the case in heavier applications. A high-voltage system is always dimensioned based on the unique needs and duty cycle of the application, but is usually between 350 and 800 volts, sometimes up to 1000 volts. Increasing the voltage creates many advantages for the machine, as it provides compact, efficient and reliable systems, but also enables fast charging to minimise downtime.

High voltage is suitable for applications that require a lot of power and have high demands on short fast-charging cycles. These can include backhoe loaders, forestry machines or mining vehicles. With the right solution, it is possible to electrify these machines without compromising on performance or operating time.

Developments in high voltage are moving fast and opening up new opportunities for the electrification of heavy machinery and marine powertrains. We are seeing how technological advances and innovative solutions are addressing infrastructure and charging challenges that have previously slowed development. In the coming years, I believe the transition will accelerate as a result of increased customer demands, stricter legislation and rising fuel prices. Although the initial investment may be higher, calculations show that the electric machine often has a lower total cost compared to a fossil-fuelled alternative.

System solutions optimised for reality

Building a high-voltage system requires more than just selecting powerful components. Everything must work together. The system must be correctly dimensioned, communicate properly and be protected against faults, overload and wear.

We design solutions based on real conditions. It's about making sure there's enough power and energy for the whole working day – without unnecessary margins or the risk of downtime. Our strength lies in creating systems that are robust, easy to use and built to last.

It is not enough to simply put together powerful components to create a complete solution that works. Each system solution must be carefully dimensioned for the specific task that the machine is to perform. We take into account power requirements, energy consumption, temperatures and the user's driving experience – while also incorporating the right level of safety and robustness. This is how we arrive at a solution that works in practice.

Technology selection in the development of high-voltage solutions

Developing effective high-voltage solutions is about balancing technology, performance and energy efficiency. At ETP, we build systems based on application requirements and customer goals. Through careful technology selection, optimisation and integration, we create solutions that combine power, precision and durability.

Each system begins with a thorough analysis of the machine's power and energy requirements. Based on the analysis, we develop a concept sketch and begin the dimensioning process to select the right motor or combination of motors. In our high-voltage systems, we exclusively use synchronous motors to achieve high efficiency, compact design and low weight.

The energy density of the battery is the main challenge in an electrical system, and its properties require that all surrounding components be optimised with the battery in focus. By carefully analysing the energy and power requirements for each function, we dimension the system based on the right combination of energy efficiency, performance and cost. In many cases, several smaller motors provide higher overall efficiency and reduced energy requirements.

Our solutions are based on lithium-ion batteries with high safety, long service life and optimised control. The result is robust, scalable and reliable systems that meet high demands for sustainability and technical performance.
